APT deliver a High Efficiency Edge Data Centre as part of the Newcastle Civic Centres £45m Revamp

Advanced Power Technology are proud to have contributed to the Newcastle Civic Centre’s £45m revamp by designing and installing a new 200kW data-centre to support the critical IT operations in the heart of the city.

APT had previously worked with NCC’s consultants on a high efficiency data-centre for a University project so were the obvious choice to help determine the new data centre’s specification.

Newcastle council’s remit was to improve environmental security, energy efficiency and to adopt a modular approach that would enable them to meet the unpredictable needs of future IT demands. APT’s was able to match these requirements with a fully managed turnkey solution.

Delivering the new data-centre was critical to the wider refurbishment timescales as the existing data-centres were to be decommissioned and demolished during the early stages to make way for the construction of the new coroner’s court. As a specialist sub-contractor, APT worked closely with the main contractor to ensure that the space allocated was modified and enabled before the facility installation could begin. APT met the challenge of building, commissioning and handing over a live data-centre amidst the overall refurbishment through precise coordination and communication with all parties.

As the data-centre sits at the heart of the digital transformation, it is only fitting that APT deployed Schneider’s award winning EcoStruxure-IT Expert and Asset Advisor as the Data Centre Infrastructure Management software. This cloud-based software is part of the wider EcoStruxure family designed to leverage the Internet of Things and enable the connected, harmonious and efficient operation of complex  Building Management Systems.

Within the first months after commissioning, EcoStruxure-IT wrote its own success story after detected a fault within one of the Power Distribution Units connected to Schneider Electric’s Remote Monitoring Service Bureau. Before normal operation was jeopardised, an engineer was dispatched to site to address the fault and re-commission the unit. Using high level analytics and artificial intelligence EcoStruxure learns to predict equipment failures and can prescribe the required preventative maintenance. This further increases efficiency and resilience.

APT supplied and installed everything from racks and thermal containment, critical power and cooling, through to fire suppression, raised access flooring, environmental monitoring and a 550 kVA stand-by generator. APT will also provide ongoing service and maintenance to support the client throughout the lifespan of the data centre. This project demonstrates how each service and product line provided by Advanced Power Technology comes together to deliver on performance and resilience.
