Sheffield Hallam boosts IT efficiency with new Schneider Electric data centre and DCIM software designed and installed by APT
Situated in the heart of the steel city, Sheffield Hallam University’s Charles Street building is part of the University’s overall aim to improve the student experience and enhance the University reputation. This development will brought together the College of Social Sciences and Arts. The design of the building allows public access through the building along Brown Lane and is sympathetic to the heritage in terms of Butcher Works. It also takes account of the forward thinking values of the University as well as the modern design of adjacent buildings and opposite on Arundel Gate. The development on Charles Street also provided a fantastic opportunity to consolidate the Universities distributed IT infrastructure
Working with Advanced Power Technology, an Elite Partner to Schneider Electric and specialist in data centre design, build and maintenance, Sheffield Hallam University has undertaken work to deploy a state-of-the art highly virtualised data centre as part of a £30m building development at Charles Street in central Sheffield.

Goal
Work alongside Balfour Beatty and SHU to implement a highly efficient state-of-the-art data centre in Sheffield Hallam’s new Charles Street facilities.
Story
Following a contract tender, APT was selected to provide and install the cooling and power infrastructure equipment and the DCIM software necessary to manage it efficiently. APT had to work to install highly delicate and critical infrastructure as the building was being constructed.
Solution
Two Schneider Electric Hot Aisle Containment Systems (HACS) were deployed to ensure an efficient and effective cooling supply. Two 300kW free-cooling units supply chilled water to the APC InRow cooling units maintain optimum operating temperatures.
Results
APT implemented the latest products from Schneider Electric and other partners to allow the University to operates its IT infrastructure in confidence, knowing that their facilities are not only resilient, but also energy efficient.
